An ulcer is a raw patch resulting from acid damage to the lining. The majority of cases ulcers are caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Other causes include damage inflicted by drugs (such as aspirin). Around one in eight people in the UK develops a peptic ulcer at some time.
Symptoms include heartburn, hunger pangs, vomiting and a ‘dull ache’ starting two to three hours after a meal.

THE TEST: A blood test to check for H. pylori. Put a drop of blood on a test strip or in a test cassette, depending on kit; these change colour depending on the presence of bacteria. Results take ten minutes.

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori (”H. pylori”) causes conditions such as gastritis and stomach ulcers.There is as yet no immunisation available against the infection, which occurs in both children and adults. However, use of the appropriate medication (such as antibiotics) can eliminate the bacterium.
